Official source — PdfCraft

getartcraft.com → the app's page → Download for desktop (Windows build)

  1. Download the Windows build from getartcraft.com (official source only).
  2. Run the installer or unzip the package — it is a native Rust binary, no runtime required.
  3. Open the app, create a document or open a real file (e.g. .psd in PhotoCraft, .svg in VectorCraft).
  4. No account, no signup, no subscription — the family has none.

GPU compositing runs through wgpu (DX12/Vulkan). A GPU with a supported driver helps; it is not mandatory.

Does your computer have a dedicated GPU (or a recent integrated GPU with Vulkan/Metal/DX12 drivers)?
Do you need to work offline most of the time?

Based on the project's stated rendering stack (wgpu: Metal/Vulkan/DX12/WebGPU; WASM browser builds). The project publishes no hard minimum specs.

Read anything, organize anything

PdfCraft is an open-source PDF reader and editor — a clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Acrobat rebuilt in pure Rust. The reading side is the headline: it renders complex typography, vertical Japanese text, color emoji, gradients and transparency beautifully ('Read anything, beautifully').

The organizing side treats pages like cards on a table: rotate, delete, insert and move pages with deep undo. Merge and split preserve links, form fields, layers and attachments — nothing is lost. Security handlers cover RC4 through AES-256, so protected documents open and their rules are respected.

Native builds run on macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a Web version. CLI and MCP interfaces make it agent-native.

Key facts at a glance

  • High-quality rendering: complex typography, vertical Japanese text, color emoji, gradients and transparency
  • Page organization like cards on a table — rotate, delete, insert, move, with deep undo
  • Merge and split that preserve links, form fields, layers and attachments
  • Document protection: RC4 through AES-256 security handlers, rules respected
  • Native macOS / Windows / Linux / FreeBSD plus Web; CLI and MCP for agents
Status: Alpha — ~55% of daily essential features, ~49% toward Acrobat Pro full functionality (README). GitHub stars: 11.7k (2026-10-13). License: open source (MIT/Apache-2.0).

Quick start — first five minutes

  1. Download PdfCraft from getartcraft.com (macOS, Windows, Linux, FreeBSD) or use the web build — free, no subscription.
  2. Open any PDF — complex typography, emoji and transparency all render natively.
  3. Organize pages: rotate, delete, insert and move them like cards, with deep undo.
  4. Merge or split documents — links, form fields, layers and attachments are preserved.
  5. Open protected documents (RC4 to AES-256); drive bulk jobs from the CLI or an MCP-connected agent.

Common uses

  • Read and annotate PDFs with high-quality rendering, free
  • Organize multipage documents — reorder, rotate, delete pages with deep undo
  • Merge contracts or split scans without losing links, fields, layers or attachments
  • Open password-protected documents (RC4–AES-256)
  • Automate document workflows via CLI and MCP

Rendering that respects the document

PDFs hide complexity: vertical Japanese text, color emoji, gradients, transparency, odd fonts. Most readers flatten or mangle some of it. PdfCraft's renderer was built to draw these correctly, which is the difference between 'the PDF opens' and 'the PDF looks right'.

Merge and split without losing anything

Naive PDF tools flatten annotations, drop form fields or strip attachments during merge/split. PdfCraft preserves links, form fields, layers and attachments through the operations — which is what makes it safe for real documents like contracts and submissions.

Honest gaps

README: about 55% of daily essential features and ~49% toward full Acrobat Pro functionality. Advanced editing, signatures workflows and Acrobat Pro extras are not all there. For reading, organizing, merging and splitting it is genuinely usable today.
